How often should I check for security updates if I don't use automatic updates?

Once a week is a good baseline for most people. Check your operating system, browser, apps, router, and any smart home devices on the same day so it becomes a habit.

Are automatic updates safe, or should I review each one first?

For most users, automatic updates are the safest choice. Manual review is only practical if you have the time and skill to evaluate release notes; otherwise, the delay usually outweighs the benefit.

What should I do with a device that no longer receives updates?

Stop using it for sensitive activities if possible, disconnect it from your main network, and plan to replace it. Continuing to use unsupported devices on the same network as your main devices increases risk for everything else.

Can updates themselves contain malware?

Legitimate updates from official sources — your device maker, app store, or browser — are not malware. The risk comes from fake "update" pop-ups on websites or in emails, which are scams. Always update through the official settings menu, never through a link in a message.

Do I need antivirus software if I keep everything updated?

Updates and antivirus serve different purposes. Updates close known weaknesses; antivirus helps detect new or unknown threats. Many people benefit from using both, but a fully updated system is already a strong foundation.
