Viola Davis may headline HBO Max’s Peacemaker spinoff series

Must read

Earlier this year, Peacemaker was such a big hit for HBO Max that it earned an early second season renewal. Now, the Peacemaker by-product series are in focus. Deadline reports that Viola Davis is in negotiations for an executive filmmaker and stars in the currently untitled show. If Davis joins, she will reprise her role as Amanda Waller of The Suicide Squad movies.

In the DC Expanded Universe, Waller is the head of Task Force X, a secret government program that blackmails supervillains into going on suicide missions for their nation. Hence the nickname Suicide Squad. Waller has also shown a relentless streak in the films, and a willingness to assassinate her agents if they disobey her orders on the field. She’s not an easy character to like, but Waller isn’t bad. Instead, she is immoral, and she does not feel the need to adhere to any heroic ideals because she has never claimed to be a hero.

Unless the proposed series is a political thriller with the DCEU, there is likely to be some action component to the show. It would actually make more sense to change the Suicide squad a franchise to HBO Max, as the previous film did not light up the box office last summer. Dirite, The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker both performed very well for HBO Max, suggesting that TV is where they belong.

Davis made two unannounced cameos as Waller on Peacemaker as the mother of Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks), and the puppeteer behind Christopher Smith / Peacemaker (John Cena) and his mission to take on an alien threat. On Waller’s orders, Leota planted evidence that blamed Peacemaker as a murderer for hiding the alien invasion. However, Leota rebelled against her mother and cleared Peacemaker’s name before she exposed the existence of Task Force X and demanded an investigation into Waller. That seems like mature territory for the new show to explore.

If HBO Max signs Davis, it would be a coup to get the Oscar and Emmy winning actress. Her previous television credits include How To Get Away With Murder on ABC, and The First Lady and Showtime. She won an Academy Award for her performance in Fences.

Peacemaker creator James Gunn will complete the new spin-off series, which will be written by Guards clerk Christal Henry. Peter Safran will also perform the show along with Henry and Gunn.
